TCT-Community Centre-DSC_9365Plenty of progress can be seen at Tayport’s new Community Hub in Shanwell Road.

This new multi-purpose building is transforming the 3-acre site of the long derelict former Abertay Steel Works.  It is now expected to open in October.

Help name Tayport’s new community centre

Any inspirations for a name?  “Tayport Community Hub” is not set in stone!  Ideas to enquiries@tayportct.org.uk.  Please include the words “Naming the Hub” in the email title.

Finally it is happening!

For several years Tayport Community Trust has been consulting local people and community groups.  Theirs ideas were used to develop ambitious plans for a versatile community building.  it will be used for sports, arts, community meetings and events, tourism and business, and have an additional cafe and camp site . Over £2.8M in capital funding was raised, through a number of very generous grants and donations.  The project has evolved from the original campaign for a local sports centre led by Tayport Sports Action Group when local residents raised the very impressive sum of £54,540.

TCT-Community Centre-DSC_9376The aim is to make a real difference to Tayport people of all ages and abilities through new opportunities to enjoy sport, health and well-being activities, workshops and learning.  The Hub’s flexible and accessible spaces have been designed to meet a diverse range of interests and needs.  For example there will be a ‘Changing Places’ toilet for people with complex disabilities and their carers http://changing-places.org/.

The Hub will be run as a social enterprise, bringing local people together to make and influence local decisions, and creating new jobs and volunteering opportunities.  It will draw on the skills of volunteers and staff in Harbour Cafe and Tayport Community Garden.

It will also be an outdoor activity centre and information point for visitors to Tayport, Tentsmuir Nature Reserve and Beach and the new Dundee Quayside including V & A Design Museum.  Work on a camp site close by is planned for 2020.  Increased visitors to this lovely part of the world should help generate income and employment in Tayport.

Active Tayport Project

Active Tayport will be the first major project based at the Hub and will run for three years from the opening of the building scheduled for October 2019.  Plans include:

  1. a range of sport and wellbeing activities, working with local sports and fitness groups
  2. outdoor activities, exploring the lovely natural environment of Tentsmuir.  Beach and Forest, on foot or bike, in partnership with RSPB, Fife Coast and Countryside Trust, Scottish Natural Heritage and Forestry Commission.
  3. health and well-being information and outreach services.
  4. new jobs and volunteering opportunities as well as the change for young people to develop work skills through modern apprenticeships and student placements.
  5. education and training activities and workshops.

Project Co-ordinator for Tayport Community Hub

Tayport Community Trust will employ a full-time Project Co-ordinator for the Active Tayport programme.  We are delighted to welcome Yvonne Wynia who has been appointed to the post.  Yvonne will start work on 12 August.  Her job will involve consultation with everyone using the Hub, stakeholders and the wider community.  She will be responsible for establishing it as the centre for a lively and varied range of activities, working with local groups, statutory agencies and the voluntary sector, and with local volunteers and staff.  She will also have management responsibilities at the Hub, working with Tayport Community Trust.

Yvonne has extensive experience working for NHS Fife as a Health Promotion Officer, particularly with young people.  She says “I have lived in Scotland for 19 years, with the last 8 in North East Fife, a lovely and unique part of the country.  I look forward to working with Tayport Community Trust and am grateful for having the opportunity to help shape the Community Hub into a vibrant and welcoming activity centre.”
