An afternoon with words and image from authors and artists behind three books on Hebridean life and Gaelic culture – all based in North-East Fife and near neighbours.
Derek Robertson’s book Bho Bheul an Eòin/From The Bird’s Mouth, gives Gaelic names to new bird and animal species driven north by climate change. Working from his studio in Balmerino, Derek is a renowned wildlife and landscape artist. His book Bho Bheul An Eòin / From The Birds Mouth combines art, research, nature, poetry and prose. It aims to name the new wildlife species in Scotland which do not yet have Gaelic names.
Will Maclean and Marian Leven are both artists and have worked together on several projects, including the Lewis Land Monuments. The book Compelled by Memory charts the historic battle for land on Lewis commemorated in their epic stone monuments. The design, setting and materials of these monuments are presented visually and essays tell a vivid story of the events commemorated by each monument.
Lesley Riddoch’s Riddoch on the Outer Hebrides is a thought-provoking commentary based on broadcaster Lesley Riddoch’s cycle journey through the beautiful island chain from Barra to the Butt of Lewis fifteen years ago. Her book was completely updated in 2023 and describes the humour of islanders and challenges facing new community landowners.
All four artists/authors will give a brief talk about their work, chat together and sign books afterwards.
